What are the general guidelines for dimming 12-volt LED bulbs?

Last Updated: Jan 06, 2017 12:56PM EST
For the best performance, two compatibility issues with dimming 12-volt LED bulbs need to be addressed. First, the dimmer must be compatible with the transformer being used. Secondly, the 12-volt bulb must be compatible with the dimmer/transformer combination.

As a rule of thumb, if an electronic transformer is used, then an electronic low voltage dimmer must be used. If a magnetic low voltage transformer is being used, then a magnetic low voltage dimmer must be used.

Many 12-volt electronic transformers have a minimum load rating. If the load rating is not met, there may be issues with performance, with or without a dimmer. However, if that is the case, another transformer that is rated for LED loads may need to be used.

For more information, please see our Dimmer Compatibility chart. We also have the following ballast compatibility charts: LED 2-Pin PL, LED 4-Pin PL, LED 4-Pin PL Electronic Ballast, LED 2G11 – PLL, LED T5, LED T8 A, LED T8 B, LED T8 2' & 3', LED T8 U-Bend, LED T8 8', and LED T8.
